Winning Delaware’s 2017 Small Woman-Owned Business of the Year has been one of the most proudest moments in my career. To my surprise, being recognized for work in Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) by the business community brings great joy to my heart. Sickle Cell is a Rare Disease. Without public and private resources, TOVA is challenged to sustain programs that increase access to high quality of care. Creating an innovative model of care challenges the medical community to utilize a variety of healthcare professionals in a team approach. I want to thank SCORE Delaware and the SBA for their mentorship and support. My advice to entrepreneurs is to have tenacity despite facing numerous barriers. Sickle Cell Lives Matter TM

    TOVA Sickle Cell Specialty Center will be relocating in June to Family Medicine at Greenhill in Wilmington Delaware. Due to failed negotiations since moving in at the Henrietta Johnson Medical Center c/o Southbridge Medical Advisory Council, a Federally Qualified Health Center, TOVA was unable to fully integrate services.

     We sincerely are saddened that this partnership was unable to work for many reasons. I still believe that comprehensive care services should encompass a team of healthcare providers who are willing to serve the sickle cell community. I want to thank my team for hanging in there despite not having adequate infrastructure to operate at full capacity. One-Stop-Shop access to high quality care requires a team of healthcare providers which include physicians, nurses, social workers, and community health educators all working together to improve patient health outcomes.

    TOVA’s mission is to provide Comprehensive Compassionate High Quality Care to persons with Complex Chronic Conditions like Sickle Cell Disease, which is historically underfunded. We encourage you all to contact your legislatures which includes: city council, county council, state legislature (state representative/senator), lieutenant governor, and governor to voice your concerns about the importance of equitable treatment and resources for sickle cell across the entire life span. If you have any further questions, please feel free to call. TOVA plans to expand their current programs and services with sustainable resources for the entire sickle cell community state-wide. TOVA’s aim is to help people “live well with sickle cell.”

Few Tips to Support Healthy Coping and Grieving

Dealing with the loss of a loved one or even a patient is oftentimes difficult,  Especially knowing what to say to a family, friend or caregiver, for worry to offend them or say the wrong thing.  Remember, Grieving is a natural human experience and we all have different ways of dealing with grief or loss.



Here are two Tips for Supporting Healthy Grieving
It can be hard to know how to interact with friends and family members dealing with loss.

   Ask how they are doing. Keep in mind those who are grieving will be very mindful of their loss. Don’t be afraid to mention the loved one’s name. People often find it very affirming and supportive to be asked how they’re doing and to hear their loved one’s name.  Allow them talk and share experiences about their loved one- this is therapeutic.

   Include them in social activities. It’s natural to think those who are grieving don’t want to be part of a party or get-together, but most people find it nice to be with others. They can decide for themselves if they want to go, but the most important thing is to be thought of, remembered and included.  Don't take it personal if they decline an event or social outing.  Try again at a later date.

How many Nurses and Doctors do you know Love their Job?

 Today, as I was finishing up with a patient visit, the receptionist said, "Dr. Anderson you have a package at the front desk."  Not sure what that would be, I opened the door and found a balloon and a box of chocolates.  As you are aware, physicians and nurses have a high rate of suicide in the healthcare community that is often times unspoken (Pamela Wimble, MD  founder of idealmedicalcare.org)

  Working with the demands of administrative reports, billing, billing, billing and when billing for services are rejected, getting notices that you are not seeing enough patients makes the healthcare profession a stressful and sometimes feeling like your in a hostile environment.  Dr. Pamela Wimble, the founder of Ideal Clinics is a phenomenal physician  but is also an advocate of taking the factory worker assembly line practice out of medicine. 


   Dr. Pamela Wimble emphases the importance of finding your dream job and healthcare providers becoming healers for those in greatest need.. "Love, hope, dreams are fluffy words in medicine.  Not easily measured or reimbursed.  Not valued like GPAs and board scores.  Yet- in the end-your dream is the only thing that matters.  It's what tethers you here on earth."

  When a provider is not getting the support from other colleagues in a particular location or site, sometimes it is best to seek help from others and move on.  Dr. Pamela Wimble says, "you can't do this alone.. medicine is a team sport."  This kind gesture reminded me why I provide primary specialty care for those living with Sickle Cell Disease Anemia.  Sometimes, just getting a thank you from a patient means so much ...... Why am I doing this???

TOVA Community,

            I want to thank all who came out to a standing only crowd support Dr. Anderson at the 2017 SBA Awards at the DuPont Country Club, May 3rd.  As I stood on the podium to accept this prestigious award, I emphasized how vital small businesses are to improving the Economic Health of our Local Economy.  Small Businesses create jobs-period.  Almost half of the private sector workforce (49%) is employed by a small business- that's 120 million people in the U.S.

            Small Businesses also lead the way in product innovation and technology by producing patents that spur innovation - thus creating even more jobs.  Whether the business is in healthcare, which is one of the fastest growing job sector in the U.S., or the small mom & pop ice cream store in lower Delaware; the aggregate economic impact on our Delaware Economy tips the scales.

Creating Vision Boards at the TOVA Advocacy Support Group

     
  A vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on specific life goals. A Vision board is any sort of board on which you display images that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in life.      One of the participants was so moved he stated "Dr. Anderson, I never though about what I want out of life".  Wow, that Ah-Ha moment.  Just taking a time to step away to focus on yourself is a powerful mind exercise.  The TOVA Advocacy Group meets the 2nd Wednesday of every month.Next Group Session will be held on June 7th at the Henrietta Johnson Medical Center.
