Meauring up a Teaspoon of Medicine

Re-blogged from NPR-Why A Spoonful Of Medicine Can Be A Big Safety Risk For Kids by Kara Manke

Growing up as a child, I can remember my mother giving me cough medicine and reading the back of the medicine bottle. Then she would reach in the kitchen drawer to get a 'spoon.' Working with children in Pediatrics for many years, a Teaspoon is 5cc or 5ml. If you are measuring a Teaspoon by using a spoon- you most likely are not giving the right amount. Children under 100lbs are dosed medicine based on their weight. So, accuracy in giving a medication using a standard measuring tool is very important drug safety advice.

In the study, 30 percent of parents who thought of the medication dose in terms of teaspoons or tablespoons ended up using a kitchen spoon rather than a measuring device provided with the medication, compared with only 1 percent who thought of the medication dose in terms of milliliters. The use of kitchen spoons led to a greater frequency of dosing errors, which were defined as measured doses that were 20 percent higher or lower than the prescribed amount

Always remember to use a Standard Dosing Tool: a syringe, dropper or cup. You can purchase any of these measuring devices from the drug store or ask you healthcare provider for a sample.

Support The New Beginnings - Next Step Reentry Program

Re-Blogged from Delaware Way.

Delaware Community, This is a great resource for inmates coming out of Prison to Transition back into the Community.

Sunday, July 20, 2014

Tova Community Health is hosting the 3rd James Faucett III Sickle Cell Awareness 5K and 1 Mile Walk/Run on Saturday, September 13, 2014-registration opens at 9:00am and race starts promptly at 10:00am. The race will be held at Brandywine Park by the Zoo in Wilmington, DE. Sickle Cell Disease affects the blood cells ability to carry oxygen throughout the body. Under certain conditions, these blood cells sickle or change shape which causes excruciating pain and over time may cause damage to the major organs, vessels and joints. About 1 in 10 African-Americans and 1 in 100 Hispanics carry the Sickle Cell Trait and trait carriers can pass Sickle Cell Disease onto their children. James was a devoted-loving husband, father and a friend to so many people in Delaware. James’s vision was to increase awareness about this brutal and debilitating disease and have a ‘fun filled’ event to bring Delawareans together to educate them about an unspoken and debilitating disease. Proceeds will benefit adults and their families living with Sickle Cell Disease in Delaware.

“Junior” from Steve Harvey Morning Opens Up about his Sickle Cell Secret

Sickle Cell Anemia is oftentimes an "Unspoken Disease" and people in the community may not know their friend, loved-one or colleague is suffering from this Debilitating Chronic Medical Condition. Not being able to understand this mind-set baffles how one can increase Sickle Cell Awareness if people start do not start talking and sharing their battles, struggles and experiences. There was a TV Show called, In Sickness and In Health, featured on TV shed light about a young lady's struggles to tell her fiancé about Sickle Cell before they wed. Besides, 'Junior' there are not many celebrities that have used their status to bring attention to Sickle Cell Awareness. How can this be done? The legacy left from those who championed Sickle Cell Anemia during the Civil Rights Movement may not all be here today but a new generation of leaders has to emerge. Thanks Junior for opening up.
